Casa a Rio Hondo is a private estate sitting on 13.5 acres beside the River Hondo (Rio Hondo to the locals.) just outside of Taos, New Mexico. Amid a very forested area, the property sits at the bottom of the Valdez Rim with a view of Taos' ski mountain to the east.
Nestled amid a rural farming area, the setting is untouched by commercial development where guests at Guest Cottage guest house can expect to see a diverse wildlife population including birds, raccoons, deer, coyotes, bear and an occasional elk.
Built into the side of a hill in 1840 as the Anderson Mill, the main house sits adjacent to an office for alternative health care specializing in homeopathy and nutrition. Once a chicken coup, the building has been extensively remodeled as the office for Tree of Life Homeopathy.
Imagine yourself as a guest, lazily sitting on the deck of the Guest Cottage. Your view will encompass a 100 ft. trout pond continuously fed by fresh water from the Rio Hondo. Playful winds wisp through sprawling 200-year-old cottonwood and apple trees. All the while, sounds of the Rio Hondo rushing toward the Rio Grande play background melody to nature's incredible spectacle. Guests can expect to be greeted by owners Jim and Jun Greathouse when they arrive. The couple moved to Taos from Southwest Kansas several years ago to benefit from the healthy northern New Mexico climate. The Greathouse's are art lovers, and for Jim the move was an opportunity to cultivate his art business.
Jim Greathouse has been creating metal art for many years, and currently shows his collections in a Santa Fe art gallery, at numerous Taos events, and in local establishments. A mix of craft and art, Jim creates furniture and gates as well as metal sculptures. His work is fashioned from scrap metal and pieces of oil well pipe. Jun, formerly an interior designer, floral designer, real estate agent and entrepreneur in Kansas manages the Casa a Rio Hondo with her husband and works as a certified homeopath in the Taos area. Jun's many years working in real estate and property management give her and Jim an insightful knack for pleasing lodgers. |
